How does it feel to meet such great success so early on in your writing career? Your debut novel, Haven made quite a splash and earned you a Bram Stoker Award. If there’s an underlying theme, I guess it would be the paradox of good and evil existing within all of us. Even though it’s a horror novel, I like to think there is a positive message of hope.Įternal Darkness is also a coming-of-age story, but it’s more of a classic horror tale. The theme present throughout, applying to several characters, is redemption or second chances. Haven is essentially a coming-of-age story that happens to have a monster. I just get an idea for either a scene or a character and start writing.

I don’t really have a formula for how I approach horror.

How do you approach horror? Who are your influences? What kind of thematic or subtextual elements are present in your work? Tell me a little bit about Tom Deady as a writer.
